Packing fragile items

Packing fragile items: A step by step guide for house moves by Jack & Jill Removals

We have all moved house before, and we all know how difficult and stressful a time it is. The last thing you need to worry about is getting into your new home, and realising all your fragile items are damaged. This is why you need to properly pack your items, so that you can make your new house a home. Here is a step by step guide on how to pack fragile items for moving house.

Select the right box for your house move

Don’t just go for the cheapest option; otherwise, it will cost you more to replace your expensive items in the long run. Use smaller boxes for more fragile items as they will move around less. You should also find sturdy cardboard boxes or plastic boxes so that there is not too much empty space for your items to move around in during transit. You can buy boxes and consumables from the Jack & Jills Removals website if this helps.

Select the right cushioning materials

Bubble wrap and packing paper are ideal cushioning materials, but there is nothing wrong with using towels, blankets, and even old curtains if they properly protect your belongings. You should line the bottom of the box with some material to avoid impact from underneath, and each individual item should be wrapped in your material of choice. The more fragile your item, the more comfort it will need to avoid any type of scratch or damage. Once you are happy that your items are in your box, add another layer of protective material on the top for maximum security. Put the heaviest items at the bottom of the box, and use up any interior box space with packing material to keep potential movement during transportation to a minimum.

Select the right tape

Make sure that boxes are properly sealed, otherwise all your hard work with the cushioning material will come to no avail. Ensure all boxes and wrappings are taped with proper packing tape, as cheaper alternatives such as sellotape may not have the durability and strength to keep your important items secure.

Select the right dividers for packing fragile glassware

Dividers are a great idea for packing fragile glassware. They prevent them from colliding or even touching, which can lead to scratches and damage. You can purchase cardboard dividers individually, while some boxes already include them, ensuring smaller items are kept as safe as possible. Don’t forget to individually wrap each piece of glassware, though, as this will maintain protection as much as possible. Filling out hollow spaces, such as vases, with material also adds another layer of security to your items.

Top tips on moving house packing

  1. Label boxes – Marking what items are in each box will save you a lot of time at the other end when you are trying to find where all your belongings are. If certain boxes are particularly fragile, you can write ‘Fragile’ on them so that movers take extra care. For some items, it is important that they remain the right way up to avoid damage, so writing ‘This Way Up’ is another label you can compose

    2. Take your time – We know that any move has a time element, but if you rush this process, you will cause yourself more grief in the long run. Damage is more likely to be caused if you are moving at pace, so make sure you do it properly, not just quickly

    3. Speak to an expert if you need to – The team at Jack & Jill Removals has been helping people to move house for years.
